Project Overview
A refined contemporary duplex defined by sculpted forms, curved balcony edges, and a restrained material palette, this project balances architectural softness with strong geometric order. The façade composition emphasises symmetry and depth, using layered vertical screening, recessed glazing, and integrated landscape elements to create a cohesive streetscape presence while maintaining privacy and individuality for each dwelling.
Sculpted Form & Architectural Expression
The architectural language for this project was driven by a desire to introduce curvature and softness into an otherwise structured contemporary composition. Rather than relying solely on rectilinear geometry, the upper-level forms incorporate rounded edges and framed openings that create a more fluid visual transition between solid mass and glazing. This approach produces a façade that feels intentional and refined while still maintaining strong visual clarity from the street.
Material selection plays a central role in reinforcing the architectural identity. A combination of textured render, vertical cladding elements, and dark screening provides contrast and depth, allowing the curved forms to read as prominent sculptural features rather than superficial decoration. Subtle integrated lighting within soffits and balcony edges enhances the perception of depth at night, ensuring the building maintains presence across different times of day.
Symmetry across the duplex is carefully controlled to achieve visual balance without creating monotony. While both dwellings share a cohesive architectural language, minor variations in entry sequencing, landscape treatment, and façade articulation introduce individuality, allowing each residence to maintain its own identity within the unified composition.
Spatial Planning & Site Integration
The planning strategy prioritises functional clarity, privacy, and efficient circulation while responding to the site’s suburban context. Each dwelling is organised with a clear transition from public to private zones, with ground floor living spaces opening directly toward the rear yard to maximise indoor-outdoor connection and natural light penetration. Vertical circulation is centrally located to optimise planning efficiency and minimise wasted corridor space.
Upper levels are arranged to separate bedroom accommodation from the active ground floor living areas, providing acoustic separation and long-term flexibility for family living. Strategic window placement ensures adequate daylight while managing overlooking between the two dwellings, maintaining privacy without compromising openness. The use of recessed balconies further contributes to this balance by creating protected outdoor spaces with controlled sightlines.
Landscape integration was considered as an extension of the architectural form rather than an afterthought. Entry pathways, planting zones, and soft landscape edges are designed to complement the curved façade geometry, reinforcing the overall design narrative while enhancing the pedestrian experience. The result is a development that sits comfortably within its streetscape while still presenting a distinct architectural identity.
