Project Overview
This project involved the design of a compact contemporary residence positioned within a densely vegetated Blue Mountains setting, where the surrounding forest landscape became a primary driver of the architectural response. The dwelling was conceived as a series of refined volumes that sit lightly within the natural environment, prioritising connection to nature, efficient spatial planning, and a calm architectural presence that complements rather than competes with the bushland context.

Architecture Within a Natural Landscape
The architectural approach responds directly to the heavily vegetated surroundings, with the building form intentionally broken into distinct volumes that reduce perceived mass and allow the dwelling to integrate more comfortably into its forest setting. This pavilion-like composition creates a sense of lightness and separation between elements, reinforcing the relationship between architecture and landscape while maintaining a contemporary design identity.
Large glazed openings are carefully positioned to capture framed views of the surrounding trees, allowing the natural environment to become a constant visual presence within the internal spaces. Deep recesses and overhangs provide both shading and architectural depth, creating shadow lines that enhance the façade articulation while supporting environmental performance.
Externally, darker cladding tones were selected to allow the building to visually recede into the tree canopy, reducing visual impact within the bushland context. This restrained material palette is balanced by warmer internal finishes that introduce contrast and comfort, establishing a clear distinction between the protective exterior shell and the welcoming internal environment.
Compact Planning with Spatial Quality
Despite the relatively modest footprint, the planning strategy focuses on creating a sense of openness and generosity within the home. Living spaces are organised to maximise outlook and natural light, with circulation zones minimised to ensure efficient use of floor area while maintaining functional clarity throughout the layout.
The internal arrangement promotes strong indoor-outdoor relationships, allowing occupants to experience the surrounding landscape from multiple vantage points within the dwelling. Careful spatial sequencing creates moments of compression and expansion, enhancing the perception of volume and contributing to a more dynamic residential experience despite the compact scale.
Material selections and detailing prioritise durability and longevity while maintaining a refined contemporary aesthetic. The result is a highly resolved small-scale dwelling that demonstrates how thoughtful design and careful planning can achieve both architectural quality and everyday practicality within a constrained building envelope.

Projects
Our work focuses exclusively on residential architecture, ranging from custom homes and duplex developments to alterations, additions, and secondary dwellings. Each project is carefully considered in response to its site conditions, planning controls, and the specific needs of the client.
We approach every design with an emphasis on clarity of form, efficient planning, and long-term buildability. Explore a selection of our recent projects to see how these principles translate into built outcomes across a range of sites and scales.
